Occasionally the gum line will recede more than is normal or healthy. Not only is this aesthetically undesirable, it can also create conditions for excessive decay. When the roots of the teeth are exposed, they become more vulnerable to decay.

In this case, your dentist may recommend a graft of soft-tissue to the gum area. This procedure will involve removing a portion of soft skin tissue from one area of your mouth and grafting it into the receded area. The graft may come from your own palate or it may come from a donor source. Ultimately, the goal is to cover any exposed root in order to protect the gum line and reduce sensitivity.

Your dentist can advise you on procedures that are available to stop or slow down the receding of your gum line. Once these procedures have been employed and the receding is under control, your dentist may feel that it is best to use a soft-tissue graft in order to correct any damage that has already occurred.

There are a few reasons that you may need to address the issue of a receded gum line.

  • It may make your smile aesthetically unpleasing
  • It may cause one tooth to look excessively longer than the others
  • It may cause severe pain in a particular tooth that is exposed to extreme temperatures
