How Can a Graft Help?

Occasionally the gum line will recede more than is normal or healthy. Not only is this aesthetically undesirable, it can also create conditions for excessive decay. When the roots of the teeth are exposed, they become more vulnerable to decay.
In this case, your dentist may recommend a graft of soft-tissue to the gum area. This procedure will involve removing a portion of soft skin tissue from one area of your mouth and grafting it into the receded area. The graft may come from your own palate or it may come from a donor source. Ultimately, the goal is to cover any exposed root in order to protect the gum line and reduce sensitivity.
