The faces on the magazine rack at your grocery store, news anchors on your local television network and 20-something social media models all have something in common – can you think of what that might be? If you guessed pearly white, straight as a picket fence teeth, that would be the answer we’re looking for.

As a society, we’re desperate to look naturally perfect and look perfectly natural at the same time. Achieving this look requires the skilled hand of the most experienced dentist. And while it takes commitment on your part, your desired look can be a matter of a few trips to the dentist and some prior research.

If you’re seeking out cosmetic dentistry as a solution to your dental woes, you’re not alone. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found that 86% of patients are seeking cosmetic treatments in order to improve physical attractiveness and self-esteem.

If you’re ready to take the plunge into cosmetic dentistry, but aren’t sure what treatments are right for you, we’re here to help. Read on to learn about the different types of cosmetic dental procedures and which one is right for you.

Bonding

Chipped or cracked teeth? Visible decay? If you want a long-lasting (up to 10 years!) effect that will give you an overall improved appearance, then look no further than bonding. First, your dentist will prepare your teeth by lightly etching the surface to roughen them. Your dentist will then coat your teeth with a conditioning liquid that is used to help the adhesive material stick better.

Once your teeth are prepared, your dentist will apply a resin material that matches your tooth color and features a consistency similar to putty. This substance will mold and shape into a tooth and eventually harden under a UV light. Polish is applied as the finishing touch. You can expect to be in and out of the office within 30 minutes to an hour.

Veneers

Similar to bonding, veneers give you the look of beautiful, symmetrical teeth, but with a stronger, more permanent material. A dental technician will use either porcelain or a composite resin to create your new teeth.

A millimeter of your enamel will be removed for a proper fit, and thin pieces of either material will be placed over the front side of your own teeth to create a beautiful, natural looking smile. Not everyone is a candidate for veneers, so be sure to consult with your dentist about your dental history and health to determine if veneers are the best procedure for you.

Crowns

Crowns are fixed, tooth-shaped prosthetic devices that are used to completely cover a damaged tooth or an implant. They’re used to replace a filling where the tooth is lacking, protect weak teeth or cover a discolored or misshapen tooth.

Dentists will use one of 4 different materials that have varying degrees of sealing ability and durability. These materials will not only help restore your smile to a healthy one, but can also make your teeth stronger and protect your teeth from further decay.

Teeth Whitening

Though rarely thought of as a cosmetic dentistry practice, teeth whitening reigns supreme when it comes to making quick changes to your smile. The American Association of Orthodontists cited that nearly 90% of Americans request dental whitening procedures each year.

That means that there are an awful lot of people out there searching for the best (and easiest) way to a whiter smile. Be sure to consult with your dentist and discuss whether you should choose an at-home whitening kit or professional teeth whitening to brighten your smile.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent solution that is as close to real teeth as you can get. If you’re missing teeth, this procedure is ideal. A dental implant is surgically positioned into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root, so having healthy gums is imperative for this particular procedure. Dental implants are easy to maintain, save trips to the dentist in the long run and remain secure in your mouth while talking or laughing.
